Bed by the Window, released by Rounder Records on January 1, 1998, was James King's third Rounder album — recorded with his working road band, supplemented by fiddler Bobby Hicks as a guest. The program leans into the country songbook for some of its strongest selections, including Stonewall Jackson's Big House on the Corner, Ernest Tubb's Yesterday's Winner Is a Loser Today, the haunting title track, the Hicks-fiddled Tall Pines, and a reading of They'll Never Take Her Love From Me. King's distinctive hard-bluegrass lead voice — clear, unbending, traditional-leaning — frames the program with the authority that had made him the most respected straight-bluegrass singer of his generation.
