Special Consensus's Signs, released on Pinecastle Records (PRC-1169) in March 2009, presents a lineup featuring Ashby Frank on mandolin—who also wrote the title track—alongside Greg Cahill on banjo, Justin Carbone on guitar, and David Thomas on upright bass. Tim Crouch guests on fiddle; Randy Kohrs, on dobro. Half the album's songs were written or co-written by band members, reflecting the ensemble's growing ambitions as composers, and the title track climbed the Bluegrass Unlimited charts. Sonya Isaacs contributes a vocal on the gospel track "Footprints." As the band's 14th recording, Signs consolidated the ensemble's Pinecastle-era identity before a move to Compass Records produced their Grammy-nominated and IBMA Album of the Year-winning releases.
