Live at the Fillmore East

The Grateful Dead

Album · 1970

Live at the Fillmore East is a concert recording from the Grateful Dead, the San Francisco psychedelic rock and improvisational ensemble whose performing approach — built on open-ended song structures, extended improvisation, and a direct relationship with a dedicated following — made their live recordings among the most widely circulated in American rock music. Jerry Garcia plays guitar and sings; Bob Weir plays guitar and sings; Phil Lesh holds the bass and sings. The Fillmore East, the New York City venue that promoter Bill Graham operated from 1968 to 1971 at Second Avenue and Sixth Street, was among the foremost stages in American rock during those years, and the Dead performed there multiple times, generating recordings that document their improvisational approach in one of its most celebrated contexts.
