Native American, released by Rounder Records in 1988, is one of the most concentrated statements of Tony Rice's mature solo style — a balance of bluegrass, jazz-leaning acoustic music, and folk-revival songwriting that drew on the singers he most admired. The program covers Gordon Lightfoot's Shadows, Joni Mitchell's Urge for Going, Phil Ochs's Changes, and Ian Tyson's Summer Wages, with Mary Chapin Carpenter contributing vocals and her own composition John Wilkes Booth. Recorded at Bias Recorders in Springfield, Virginia, the album captures Rice's flatpick guitar and unhurried baritone at the moment both were at their unmistakable peak. It belongs to the Tony Rice canon as one of his most carefully constructed releases.
