Blue Ridge Mountain Blues · Are You Alone?

Bill Clifton

Single · 1958 · Mercury 71292X45

William August Marburg was born in 1931 into a Maryland family, but the music he pursued was rooted in the string band and old-time traditions of the Blue Ridge. Recording as Bill Clifton, he brought an unusual combination of background and genuine musical commitment to the early bluegrass revival, at a moment when the genre was beginning to attract attention from urban folk enthusiasts who had encountered it through the broader American folk revival of the late 1950s. His Mercury recording "Blue Ridge Mountain Blues" backed with "Are You Alone?" (Mercury 71292X45, 1958) places him in his early professional period, when he was working to establish himself as a recording artist while simultaneously building connections with the folk revival networks centered in cities like Washington and New York.

Clifton's significance in bluegrass history rests partly on his role as a bridge figure — a musician who could speak to both the traditional rural audience that had always been the genre's core and the newer urban listeners discovering it through folk clubs, coffeehouses, and the LP releases that labels like Folkways were producing. His interest in preserving older material, including British Isles ballads and early country repertoire, gave his recordings a documentary quality that distinguished them from the more entertainment-oriented work of his contemporaries.

He later recorded for Starday and released recordings that circulated widely in both the United States and Britain. His subsequent relocation to England, where he became a central figure in the British folk revival, extended his reach into audiences for whom bluegrass and American roots music arrived as a discovery rather than a birthright. His Mercury single stands as an early document of a career that would prove unusually international in its scope and influence.
