Sittin' By the Road is a recording by Blaze Foley — the Austin, Texas singer-songwriter born Michael David Fuller who became one of the more mythologized figures in the Texas singer-songwriter tradition. Foley's music occupied the borderland between country, folk, and the stripped-down confessional mode associated with Townes Van Zandt, and his violent death in 1989 contributed to the posthumous elevation of a reputation that had barely registered commercially during his lifetime. He recorded relatively little in formal settings, and most of what survives was captured on modest equipment in informal circumstances. "If I Could Only Fly" — later recorded by Merle Haggard — remains his best-known song, reflecting the unassuming, deeply felt quality of his songwriting. Sittin' By the Road documents a voice whose influence on the Texas songwriting community outlasted his physical presence by many years.
