Southern Flavor, Bill Monroe's 1988 MCA release, was recorded that January at Nashville's Sound Stage Studio when Monroe was seventy-six and still leading the Blue Grass Boys after nearly half a century. The ten-track session yielded the instrumental title piece, Sugar Loaf Mountain, and Stone Coal, alongside three gospel quartet numbers cut on the final day. When the Recording Academy presented its first-ever Grammy for Best Bluegrass Recording in 1989, the prize went to this album — a fitting historical bracket for the man who had invented the music it now honored. Monroe would record only sparingly after, making Southern Flavor effectively the late summation of his recording career.
