The One and Only cover

The One and Only spotlights Lester Flatt and the Nashville Grass, the band he led after his 1969 split from Earl Scruggs, issued on the small Nugget label around 1970. The Nashville Grass was a more traditionally oriented ensemble than Scruggs's electrified Revue, and Flatt made no apology for his preference for the older sound — the steady rhythm guitar, the unadorned lead singing, the G-runs that had been his signature since the Foggy Mountain Boys. The band drew strong musicians, among them a teenage Marty Stuart, who received an essential education in the Flatt and Scruggs repertoire at Flatt's side. Coming just after the dissolution of one of bluegrass's most famous partnerships, the album positions Flatt as an institution in his own right rather than as half of a duo, carrying the traditional banner forward on his own terms.
