When the Saints Go Marching In, released by Columbia in 1966 (CS 9313), is a Flatt and Scruggs gospel album from the duo's late Columbia run — eleven sacred numbers built around the title song, the New Orleans standard refitted for the Foggy Mountain Boys' bluegrass arrangement. The program leans into the sacred repertoire Flatt in particular favored throughout his career, with the working lineup of Paul Warren on fiddle, Josh Graves on dobro, and the close harmony singing the band's recent records had relied on. By 1966 Columbia was steadily steering Flatt and Scruggs toward broader country and folk material; the gospel LPs remained one of the few corners of their catalog where the bluegrass identity was undisturbed.
