“Jenny Lynn” is an old-time fiddle tune carried into bluegrass by Bill Monroe, who learned it from his fiddle-playing uncle, Pendleton Vandiver — the “Uncle Pen” of Monroe’s famous song. The fiddler Kenny Baker, long Monroe’s bandmate, did much to make the tune known.
A bright breakdown in the key of A, “Jenny Lynn” belongs to the body of tunes Monroe absorbed from the old Kentucky fiddlers of his childhood and brought into the bluegrass repertoire.
The tune is a favorite among fiddlers and mandolin players. The version heard here is by the mandolinist Mike Compton.
