Dan Tyminski
Best known for
Mandolin
Guitar
Lead Vocals
Dan Tyminski is the voice of “Man of Constant Sorrow” from O Brother, Where Art Thou? — but far more than that, he is one of the most respected lead vocalists and multi-instrumentalists in modern bluegrass. Thirty years as guitarist and lead vocalist of Alison Krauss & Union Station (1994–2024), 14 Grammy Awards, multiple IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year wins, and a solo career that has crossed into mainstream pop (the 2013 Avicii hit “Hey Brother” featured his vocal) make him one of the most versatile acoustic musicians alive.
- Born in Rutland, Vermont. Grew up in the Northeast bluegrass scene. Brother Stan Tyminski played mandolin.
- Joined Tim Stafford and others in the Lonesome River Band in 1989, replacing original lead singer Tim Austin. Recorded three albums with the band through 1994.
- Joined Alison Krauss & Union Station in 1994 as guitarist and lead vocalist, replacing Tim Stafford. His powerful, classic-sounding tenor became a defining element of Union Station's sound for the next 30 years.
- Provided the singing voice for George Clooney's character Everett McGill in the Coen Brothers' O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) — his rendition of “I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow” with the Soggy Bottom Boys became one of the most recognized bluegrass performances in history. Won two CMA Awards and a Grammy for the recording.
- Solo project Carry Me Across the Mountain (Doobie Shea, 2000) and Wheels (with the Dan Tyminski Band, Rounder, 2008) featured players including Adam Steffey, Barry Bales, Ron Stewart, and Justin Moses.
- Co-wrote and sang lead on Avicii's 2013 house-music crossover hit “Hey Brother,” which reached #1 in multiple European countries and #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 — one of the most unlikely pop placements of any bluegrass vocalist.
- Released Southern Gothic (2017) — a country-pop crossover album that stretched his sound further from traditional bluegrass than any previous project. Followed by God Fearing Heathen (2023) returning toward traditional material.
- 14 Grammy Awards across his career, including multiple Best Bluegrass Album wins with Union Station.
- IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year three times (2006, 2008, 2011).
- Featured vocalist on Alison Krauss & Union Station albums: So Long So Wrong (1997), New Favorite (2001), Lonely Runs Both Ways (2004), Live (2002), and Paper Airplane (2011).
- Left Alison Krauss & Union Station in 2024 to focus on his solo career. Russell Moore of IIIrd Tyme Out replaced him for the 2025 Arcadia album and tour.
- Leads the Dan Tyminski Band (previous lineups have included Ron Stewart, Adam Steffey, Barry Bales) and continues to record and tour. Also a versatile mandolinist and guitarist; his session work appears on dozens of major bluegrass and country albums.
- Inducted into the Vermont Country Music Hall of Fame.
