Merle Haggard
Merle Haggard was an American country singer, songwriter, and guitarist, one of the defining country artists of the 20th century.
- Born in 1937 in Oildale, California, the son of Oklahoma Dust Bowl migrants.
- Was incarcerated at San Quentin as a young man before turning to music.
- With his band the Strangers, was a central figure in the Bakersfield Sound, alongside Buck Owens.
- Had a long string of number-one country hits and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He died in 2016.
