Redd Stewart
Redd Stewart was a country singer, songwriter, and fiddler who spent decades as the vocalist and fiddler in Pee Wee King's Golden West Cowboys. He co-wrote “Tennessee Waltz” with King and contributed to standards including “You Belong to Me.”
- Born Henry Ellis Stewart on May 27, 1923, in Ashland City, Tennessee; died August 4, 2003, in Louisville, Kentucky.
- Joined Pee Wee King's Golden West Cowboys in 1937.
- Co-wrote “Tennessee Waltz” (1946) with Pee Wee King, reportedly sketching the lyrics on a matchbook.
- Wrote “A Soldier's Last Letter” while serving in WWII; it became a 1944 #1 country hit for Ernest Tubb.
- Co-wrote “You Belong to Me” and “Slow Poke” with King and Chilton Price.
- Inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame as a charter member in 1972.
