Musician · River, Kentucky · Also a recording artist
Best known for Bass

Hylo Brown was a Kentucky-born guitarist and lead singer whose unusually wide vocal range — from low bass to high tenor — gave him both his nickname and a sound that anchored Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs's Foggy Mountain Boys before he led his own Timberliners through a long Capitol Records run.

  • Born Frank Brown Jr. on April 20, 1922 in River, Johnson County, Kentucky; family later moved to Springfield, Ohio.
  • Earned the nickname "Hylo" for his distinctive vocal range from high to low.
  • Began his radio career in 1939 on WCMI in Ashland, Kentucky.
  • Joined Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs's Foggy Mountain Boys in 1957.
  • Led his own band, Hylo Brown and the Timberliners, formed from the Buckskin Boys in 1955.
  • Recorded for Capitol Records (1959), Starday (1962–63), and Rural Rhythm (1966–68).
  • Retired from performing in 1991; died of cancer on January 17, 2003.
  • Inducted posthumously into the SPBGMA Preservation Hall of Greats in 2003.
