A Change of Scenery, the Seldom Scene's 1988 release on Sugar Hill (SH-3763), introduces the lineup change announced in the title — Lou Reid replacing Phil Rosenthal on lead vocals and guitar (Rosenthal had himself replaced founding member John Starling), and T. Michael Coleman replacing founding bassist Tom Gray. Lou Reid had come from Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver; the band was now noticeably different in vocal sound, though John Duffey's unmistakable high tenor still anchored the arrangements. The shift to electric bass — Coleman's instrument of choice — became immediately audible in live performance. The album marked the Scene's second-generation moment, a configuration that would carry the band through the late 1980s and beyond.
