Another Side of Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan

Album · 1964

"Another Side of Bob Dylan," released in August 1964 on Columbia Records, was Dylan's fourth album, recorded in a single three-hour session at Columbia Studio A in New York City. Solo performances on acoustic guitar, piano, and harmonica — produced by Tom Wilson — make up all eleven tracks. The album marks Dylan's pivot away from topical protest writing toward personal, introspective songwriting; "It Ain't Me, Babe" explicitly rebuffs the "voice of a generation" role his audience had assigned him. Critics regard it as the hinge between Dylan's early pure-folk period and the electric era that followed — a transitional document essential to understanding the mid-1960s transformation of American roots music and the folk revival.
