Away Out on the Mountain draws its title from one of the essential early country songs, the 1925 piece associated with Jimmie Rodgers and later recorded definitively by Bill Monroe. The title alone signals an orientation toward the pre-bluegrass roots from which Monroe and his contemporaries drew their material. The mountain of the title is both geographical and metaphorical, standing for the isolation, self-reliance, and unmediated emotional expressiveness that the best traditional music has always carried. The album gathers performances in that spirit, united by repertoire and approach rather than by a single commercial identity.
