Back Porch Bluegrass announced the arrival of the Dillards in 1963 as one of the most distinctive voices in the folk and bluegrass crossover moment. The Dillards — Rodney and Doug Dillard alongside Dean Webb and Mitch Jayne — came from Salem, Missouri, and brought a particular Ozark humor and musicality to their debut Elektra recording. The album includes 'Dooley,' which became a signature song, and 'Old Home Place,' a minor-key lament that would be covered countless times in the ensuing decades. The Dillards' ability to balance authenticity with approachability made Back Porch Bluegrass an enduring gateway record, and the group's influence extended deeply into country rock through later associations with the Byrds.
