Barbara Keith cover

Barbara Keith (Reprise Records, 1972) is the self-titled second album from the Massachusetts-born folk and country-rock singer-songwriter, produced by Larry Marks and recorded in Los Angeles with a roster of session players that included Lowell George, Spooner Oldham, Sneaky Pete Kleinow, and Jim Keltner. Keith's first Verve Forecast album (1969) had been withdrawn quickly, and this Reprise release represents a more fully realized statement of her songwriting — a blend of country warmth, folk directness, and the California-inflected soft-rock sound of the early 1970s. Keith returned her advance shortly after the album's release and stepped back from her solo recording career, making this the final document of her brief major-label period. She later re-emerged in a very different context with the Stone Coyotes, a roots-rock family band, but her 1972 Reprise album has retained an enduring reputation among collectors of the era's country-tinged singer-songwriter work.
