Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn

Album · 2014

Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn is a studio duet album from Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn, two of the banjo's most accomplished contemporary advocates, documenting their musical partnership in an intimate format that removes everything from the equation except the two instruments and the performers' combined repertoire of original songs, folk material, and cross-cultural pieces drawn from Washburn's years of performing in China. Fleck plays banjo; Washburn plays banjo and sings. Released on Rounder Records, the album presents a conversation between two distinct banjo approaches — Fleck's jazz-inflected chromaticism and extended harmonic language on the one hand, and Washburn's deep immersion in old-time and Appalachian tradition on the other — finding where those approaches converge in the shared instrument both performers have spent their careers expanding beyond its conventional contexts.
