Bloodline, released in the summer of 2010 on Rural Rhythm Records, is the first album by the Darrell Webb Band, the first project Webb led after years as a sideman. He had joined the Lonesome River Band in 1994 as its mandolinist and tenor singer, then worked with J.D. Crowe & the New South, Wildfire, Rhonda Vincent & The Rage, Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper, and Audie Blaylock and Redline.
Webb sings lead and plays mandolin. His band is Chris Wade on banjo, Jeremy Arrowood on bass, Asa Gravley on guitar and Tyler Kirkpatrick on Dobro, with Jim VanCleve guesting on fiddle. Adam Steffey wrote in the liner notes that Webb had taken “the next logical step” in his musical progression and that many fans had wondered when he would put his own group together.
The twelve songs are all by other writers, although Webb himself has written songs that Lou Reid and the Lonesome River Band recorded. They include the title song by Larry Cordle and Connie Leigh, Jimbo Whaley’s “Kings of Orebank,” and Stanley Johnson’s “Big Black Train,” on which Kirkpatrick takes Dobro solos. Other songs came from Elmer Burchette and Jerry Cole. The band was an official showcase act at the 2010 IBMA World of Bluegrass in Nashville.
