Bluegrass Evolution was recorded in April 1973 and released in 1977 on Starday/King (SLP 489); the King KSCD 489 catalog number reflects the later CD reissue. The lineup is the classic J.D. Crowe and the New South of the period — Crowe on banjo, Tony Rice on guitar and lead vocals, Larry Rice on mandolin and lead vocals, Bobby Slone on bass — augmented by Nashville session players adding drums and pedal steel. The record is Crowe's first deliberate push beyond pure bluegrass into an electrified country/folk/R&B hybrid that foreshadowed the landmark Rounder 0044 of two years later. The session sat unreleased for nearly four years before Starday finally issued it, by which point the band had already moved on to Rounder.
