Brand New Country Songs, released by King Records in early January 1968 (SK 1028), is Ralph Stanley's debut LP as a bandleader after Carter Stanley's December 1966 death — Ralph's first chance to write the Stanley legacy forward on his own terms. The program includes three previously unrecorded songs co-credited to Carter, including I'm Better Off Now That You're Gone (which had appeared in a 1951 Stanley Brothers songbook) and Wonderful World Outside, which Carter had written on an airplane during the brothers' 1966 European tour. Stanley's high tenor and the Clinch Mountain Boys lineup of the period frame material that bridged the brother-act tradition and Ralph's new working life as the surviving Stanley.
