Chambergrass (Sugar Hill Records SUG-CD 3945, 2002) is a retrospective compilation gathering highlights from a decade of studio recordings by the trio of Byron Berline, Dan Crary, and John Hickman — three of the most technically accomplished instrumentalists produced by the Southern California and Oklahoma acoustic music world of the 1970s and '80s. Berline plays fiddle; Crary plays guitar; and Hickman plays banjo. The album's subtitle, "A Decade of Tunes from the Edges of Bluegrass," describes the trio's working position: within bluegrass form but following the repertoire wherever it led — toward jazz harmony, contest-fiddle showpieces, and international fiddle music each member had absorbed. Chambergrass provides an overview of the trio's recorded output and remains a useful entry point for listeners approaching Berline-Crary-Hickman's work for the first time.
