Cherryholmes II: Black and White was released on 12 June 2007 by Skaggs Family Records, the label of Ricky Skaggs, as the second album by the family band Cherryholmes. The debut, Cherryholmes (2005), had earned a Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album, and the band won the IBMA Entertainer of the Year award in 2005. The follow-up reached number one on Billboard’s Bluegrass Albums chart; the chart dated 13 October 2007 had it at number two in its sixteenth week, after two weeks at the top.
It was recorded at Skaggs Place Studio in Nashville. Cia Cherryholmes plays banjo, Skip guitar, Molly fiddle, and Jere bass; B.J. plays fiddle on most tracks and mandolin on a few, and Sandy plays mandolin. Guests include Ricky Skaggs, who plays a Danelectro guitar on three tracks and sings harmony on the title song, Rob Ickes on dobro, and Jeff Taylor on accordion and pennywhistle. Nine of the fourteen tracks were written by members of the family: Cia wrote “You Don’t Know What Love Is,” “I Don’t Know,” “Turned Me Down” and “Don’t Give Your Heart to a Knoxville Girl”; B.J. wrote “The Nine Yards” and “Greedy Hands”; Sandy wrote “My True Love”; Molly wrote “Tell Me Why”; and B.J. and Molly wrote “Bootstrap Bill.” The title song, “Black and White,” was written by Sonya Isaacs, who sings on it with Skaggs. The album also includes Lester Flatt’s “I’ll Never Shed Another Tear,” with B.J. singing lead, and “Darkness on the Delta,” a song of Jerry Livingston, Al J. Neiburg and Marty Symes.
