Church Street Blues was released on Sugar Hill (SH 3732) in 1983, with Tony Rice producing. It was recorded at 1750 Arch Studios in Berkeley, California, with Bill Wolf as an engineer. Rice plays guitar and sings throughout, and on four tracks his brother Wyatt Rice joins him on rhythm guitar: “Cattle in the Cane,” “The Gold Rush,” “Jerusalem Ridge” and “Pride of Man.” The first three are instrumentals, and “Jerusalem Ridge” is credited to Bill Monroe.

The title song and “Orphan Annie” are Norman Blake songs. The other vocal numbers include Ralph McTell’s “Streets of London,” Bob Dylan’s “One More Night,” Tom Paxton’s “Last Thing on My Mind” and Hamilton Camp’s “Pride of Man,” alongside Jimmie Rodgers’s “Any Old Time” and the traditional “House Carpenter.” The LP has eleven tracks; the CD edition adds a twelfth, Gordon Lightfoot’s “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”
