Close Kin: A Reunion of Bluegrass and Old-Time Music (Mountain Roads Records MMR 1012) is a studio album from Adam Steffey and an ensemble of family members and close associates presenting old-time and bluegrass material in the informal family-gathering spirit that the title announces, documenting the reunion of performing relatives across generational and stylistic lines. Steffey plays mandolin; Tina Steffey sings; Bud Snyder plays banjo; Samantha Snyder and Zeb Snyder contribute additional work; Scott Freeman plays fiddle; and Jeanette Williams contributes vocal work. Steffey — whose mandolin work with Alison Krauss and Union Station and the IIIrd Tyme Out established him as one of the most admired instrumentalists in contemporary bluegrass — is heard here in the more relaxed context of family ensemble performance, presenting old-time and traditional bluegrass material in the informal gathering setting that gives the album its title.
