Adam Steffey
Best known for
Mandolin
Adam Steffey is the most-awarded mandolin player in IBMA history — a ten-time IBMA Mandolin Player of the Year whose playing has defined the modern era of bluegrass mandolin across stints with Alison Krauss & Union Station, Mountain Heart, the Lonesome River Band, the Dan Tyminski Band, and the Boxcars. His tone, timing, and tasteful phrasing have made him the instrument’s reigning stylist of the past quarter-century.
- Born Adam Carter Steffey in Norfolk, Virginia; moved with his family to Kingsport, Tennessee in 1975 when his father retired. Attended the Carter Family Fold each weekend as a youth, where he absorbed the roots-music tradition that would shape his playing.
- Started playing mandolin at age 15, taking lessons first from Audie Ratliff and later from Jack Tottle at East Tennessee State University. Primary early influence was Dempsey Young of the Lost and Found.
- First band after high school was the Boys in the Band in Kingsport. Joined the Lonesome River Band; Dan Tyminski was his replacement when he moved on.
- Helped found the near-legendary Dusty Miller alongside Tim Stafford (guitar) and Barry Bales (bass). The three were recruited together into Alison Krauss & Union Station, bringing instant credibility to Krauss’s band in the early 1990s.
- Spent approximately seven years with Union Station (1990–1998), touring extensively and playing on the Grammy-winning Now That I’ve Found You: A Collection (1995) and So Long So Wrong (1997).
- Left Union Station in 1998 and co-founded Mountain Heart. Also joined the Isaacs, a bluegrass-gospel family group where his mandolin took on a different but equally featured role.
- In 2007, left Mountain Heart and joined the Dan Tyminski Band. Co-founded the Boxcars in 2011 — one of the most critically acclaimed bluegrass bands of the 2010s.
- Ten-time IBMA Mandolin Player of the Year: 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 — a record for the instrument. Five-time Grammy winner.
- Released solo album One More for the Road (Sugar Hill, 2009) and New Primitive (Mountain Home, 2013), the latter recorded with his wife Tina Steffey on clawhammer banjo.
- Earned a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies (concentrations in English and Psychology) from East Tennessee State University in 2014. Has served as adjunct faculty in ETSU’s Bluegrass, Old Time & Country Music program, mentoring a new generation of mandolinists.
- Recent years have included stints with The Highland Travelers and Volume Five. His recorded discography as a sideman spans work with Alan Jackson, Dolly Parton, Randy Travis, the Dixie Chicks, and many other non-bluegrass artists.
