The Boxcars (Mountain Home MH 1309-2, 2010) is the debut album from the bluegrass supergroup of the same name, assembled from five veterans of the genre's most accomplished working bands. Adam Steffey on mandolin, Keith Garrett on guitar, Ron Stewart on banjo and fiddle, John Bowman on fiddle, and Harold Nixon on bass bring collective credits including Alison Krauss & Union Station, Blue Highway, and the Lynn Morris Band. The debut was immediately recognized: the Boxcars won IBMA Emerging Artist of the Year in 2011 and took Instrumental Group of the Year honors that year, repeating in 2012 and 2013. The album established the band as one of the defining progressive-traditional acts of the early 2010s — a supergroup whose instrumental and vocal cohesion arrived fully formed, with none of the developmental uncertainty typical of new ensembles.
