The Boxcars (Mountain Home MH 1309-2) was released on 19 October 2010 and is the first album by the group of the same name. Adam Steffey plays mandolin, Keith Garrett guitar, Ron Stewart banjo and fiddle, John Bowman fiddle (with banjo and guitar on some tracks) and Harold Nixon bass. Steffey had been with Alison Krauss & Union Station from 1991 and had earlier played with the Lonesome River Band; Stewart had been a long-time member of the Lynn Morris Band before spending time with J.D. Crowe; Nixon had played with The New South and Blue Moon Rising; and Bowman had worked for Doyle Lawson, Alison Krauss, The Isaacs and Crowe.
Nine of the thirteen tracks are originals, five by Garrett and four by Stewart; the rest include songs by Ron Block and Marshall Wilborn and two from the first generation of bluegrass, Jim Eanes and Earl Taylor. Garrett sings lead on most of the tracks, with Bowman on tenor and Steffey on baritone; Steffey, Bowman and Stewart also take leads, and Nixon sings harmony. Nixon and Stewart recorded, mixed and mastered the album, and the band produced it. At the 2011 IBMA awards the Boxcars were named Emerging Artist of the Year and Instrumental Group of the Year; they won the instrumental group award again in 2012 and 2013.
