Slide Rule by Jerry Douglas, released in 1992, is a landmark dobro record that expanded the instrument's perceived expressive range at a moment when Douglas was already the most in-demand resonator guitarist in Nashville. The album includes "I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby" and draws on the dobro's capacity for both melodic lead playing and rhythmic accompaniment, demonstrating Douglas's command of the instrument's full vocabulary. His tone is round and singing, his phrasing shaped by blues, jazz, and bluegrass in equal measure, and the ensemble he assembled for the record is among the best Nashville had to offer at the time. Slide Rule won a Grammy and reinforced Douglas's position as the player who, more than anyone else, moved the dobro from supporting instrument to legitimate solo voice in contemporary acoustic music.
