Slide Rule (Sugar Hill SH-C 3797), released in 1992, was Jerry Douglas’s sixth solo album and his first for Sugar Hill. He produced it. The Bluegrass Discography dates the sessions to October 1991 at Music Row Audio in Nashville.

Most of the tracks use the same band: Douglas on dobro, Scott Nygaard on guitar, Adam Steffey on mandolin, Craig Smith on banjo, Stuart Duncan on fiddle and Mark Schatz on bass. Guests change from track to track. Alison Krauss sings “I Don’t Believe You’ve Met My Baby,” on which Douglas plays Weissenborn guitar and Duncan plays moon harp. Alan O’Bryant sings Johnny Cash’s “When Papa Played the Dobro,” Maura O’Connell sings “It’s a Beautiful Life,” Ed Snodderly and Eugene Wolf sing “Pearlie Mae,” and Tim O’Brien sings and plays mandolin on Billy Roberts’s “Hey Joe,” with Artie McGlynn on guitar. On “Shoulder to Shoulder,” written by Douglas and Schatz and credited on Discogs as the International Bluegrass Music Association Awards theme, Russ Barenberg plays guitar, Sam Bush mandolin and O’Bryant banjo.

The instrumentals include Darol Anger’s “Ride the Wild Turkey” and Bill Monroe’s “Shenandoah Breakdown.” The IBMA named Slide Rule its Instrumental Album of the Year in 1992.
