Frost Bite is the second solo album by banjo player Dan Menzone, following Menzone Drive, and came out in 2009 with no label behind it. Wyatt Rice recorded it at his studio and plays guitar. Menzone is joined by Adam Steffey on mandolin, Rob Ickes on Dobro and Rickie Simpkins on fiddle. Richard Bennett and Don Rigsby sing: Bennett takes the lead on “Pallet on Your Floor” with Rigsby on tenor, and “Blue Night” appears twice, once with Steffey singing lead and once with Rigsby.
Of the thirteen tracks, Menzone wrote eight. The others include his takes on “Black Jack,” “Wheel Hoss” and “Randy Lynn Rag,” and two tunes by Lee Marcus, “Gone Beserk” and “Frostbite.” Marcus supplied computer-generated, electronic versions of the two melodies, and Menzone worked them up for banjo and band. “Gone Beserk” took first place in the instrumental category of the 2010 International Songwriting Competition, announced on 12 May 2011.
Menzone grew up in Dudley, Massachusetts, and spent 19 years with the band Traver Hollow, appearing on four of its albums. After Frost Bite he and Rice teamed up as the Rice & Menzone Alliance, whose album is Something Out of the Blue.
