“Randy Lynn Rag” was written by Earl Scruggs, who named it for his son Randy Lynn Scruggs. Flatt and Scruggs recorded it with the Foggy Mountain Boys in the mid-1950s.
A bright, up-tempo banjo instrumental, the tune makes use of Scruggs’s tuning pegs — the devices that let a player bend notes mid-phrase — in its melody. It became a standard piece for bluegrass banjoists.
The tune is a favorite for banjo players learning Scruggs’s style.
