Foggy Mountain Jamboree was released by Columbia on 7 October 1957 (CL 1019). It is a compilation of Flatt and Scruggs’s Columbia sides, not a single session: its twelve tracks were recorded in Nashville between May 1951, with “Jimmie Brown, the Newsboy,” and January 1957, with “Shuckin’ the Corn.” Eight of them had been released before; four were new on the LP: “Some Old Day,” “It Won’t Be Long,” “Blue Ridge Cabin Home” and “Your Love Is Like a Flower.”
Six of the twelve are instrumentals: “Flint Hill Special,” “Earl’s Breakdown,” “Foggy Mountain Special,” “Shuckin’ the Corn,” “Randy Lynn Rag” and “Foggy Mountain Chimes.” The band changes across the years. In 1951 Everett Lilly played mandolin, with Chubby Wise on fiddle for “Jimmie Brown” and Howdy Forrester for “Earl’s Breakdown”; Curly Seckler is the mandolinist on most of the sides from 1952 on, Benny Martin plays fiddle on the 1953 recordings, and Paul Warren and Buck Graves, on dobro, are on those from 1955 and 1957. “Some Old Day,” “Blue Ridge Cabin Home,” “Your Love Is Like a Flower” and “It Won’t Be Long” have Flatt singing lead with Seckler on tenor, and “It Won’t Be Long,” cut on 3 September 1955, adds Scruggs and Warren in a four-voice arrangement with Chet Atkins on guitar and Bob Moore on bass.
