“Foggy Mountain Chimes” was written by Earl Scruggs and recorded by Flatt and Scruggs with the Foggy Mountain Boys in 1953.
The tune is a banjo showpiece built around chiming — bell-like notes Scruggs produced by sounding harmonics on the strings. It put a distinctive technique at the center of an instrumental and became a staple of bluegrass banjo teaching.
The tune remains a piece banjo players take up to learn the chime.
