The Bluegrass Album (Alan's Country Records/EMI Nashville, 2013) is a full bluegrass project from country music star Alan Jackson — a departure from his mainstream recordings for a dedicated album of traditional-style acoustic music. Jackson's lead vocals are backed by a lineup of Nashville bluegrass specialists: Adam Steffey on mandolin, Sammy Shelor on banjo, Rob Ickes on dobro, Tim Crouch on fiddle, and Tim Dishman on bass. The album was produced by Keith Stegall and Adam Wright and distributed through EMI Nashville, which explains the major-label imprint on a traditional acoustic record. Jackson's affinity for classic country and his roots in the rural Southeast made the bluegrass transition organic; the record found commercial success while remaining faithful to the acoustic string-band tradition rather than treating bluegrass as a novelty detour from a pop-country career.
