Force of Nature (Skaggs Family Records 6989020102, 2004) was Mountain Heart's second Skaggs Family album and the first to feature the band's definitive mid-decade lineup: Steve Gulley (guitar, vocals), Barry Abernathy (banjo), Adam Steffey (mandolin), Jim VanCleve (fiddle), Jason Moore (bass), and new lead guitarist Clay Jones, who joined in 2003. Jones's addition pushed the band's progressive-acoustic sound deeper into improvisational rock and jazz territory while retaining the high-energy bluegrass core. The album earned IBMA nominations for Album of the Year and Entertainer of the Year, cementing Mountain Heart's reputation as one of the genre's most technically ambitious acts and the definitive lineup most associated with their creative peak.
