Dan Tyminski is the voice of “Man of Constant Sorrow” from O Brother, Where Art Thou? — but far more than that, he is one of the most respected lead vocalists and multi-instrumentalists in modern bluegrass. Thirty years as guitarist and lead vocalist of Alison Krauss & Union Station (1994–2024), 14 Grammy Awards, multiple IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year wins, and a solo career that has crossed into mainstream pop (the 2013 Avicii hit “Hey Brother” featured his vocal) make him one of the most versatile acoustic musicians alive.

  • Born in Rutland, Vermont. Grew up in the Northeast bluegrass scene. Brother Stan Tyminski played mandolin.
  • Joined the Lonesome River Band in 1988 on mandolin; Tim Austin remained the band's guitarist and leader. Recorded three albums with the band through 1994.
  • Joined Alison Krauss & Union Station in 1994 as guitarist and lead vocalist, replacing Tim Stafford. His powerful, classic-sounding tenor became a defining element of Union Station's sound for the next 30 years.
