Wheels was released by Rounder Records on 24 June 2008 and produced by Dan Tyminski, the singer whose lead on “Man of Constant Sorrow” was heard in the film O Brother, Where Art Thou? Tyminski sings lead throughout and plays guitar. His band on the record is Adam Steffey on mandolin, Barry Bales on bass, and Ron Stewart and Justin Moses, who share fiddle, banjo and Dobro duties from track to track. Ron Block plays guitar on two songs, Vince Gill sings harmony on “How Long Is This Train,” and Cheryl and Sharon White join him on “Some Early Morning.” The sessions took place in 2008 at OmniSound Studio in Nashville, Doobie Shea Studios in Ferrum, Virginia, and other rooms.

The song choices come from several directions. “Whose Shoulder Will You Cry On” was a Kitty Wells song and “Who Showed Who” one Del McCoury had recorded; Ron Block’s “It All Comes Down to You,” Steffey’s instrumental “Knock Knock!” and Stewart’s “I Ain’t Taking You Back No More” come from the players on the record, the title song is by Patrick McDougal, “Heads You Win, Tails I Lose” by Craig Market and Darren Shoemaker, and Tyminski wrote “How Many Times.” The album was named the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Album of the Year for 2009.
