“Where the Soul of Man Never Dies” (also titled “Where the Soul Never Dies” or “To Canaan’s Land I’m On My Way”) is a gospel hymn written by William Matthew Golden in 1914. The song’s compositional history has an unusual biographical hook: Golden wrote the hymn while serving an eight-year sentence in the state penitentiary, the song’s transcendent imagery framed against the literal confinement of its author’s circumstances.
Golden was born in Webster County, Mississippi, and worked as an itinerant gospel composer and singing-school teacher across the early 20th century. After his release from prison he resumed his gospel-music career until his death in May 1934, when he was killed in a traffic accident near Eupora, Mississippi. The hymn appeared in shape-note and gospel collections through the 1910s and 1920s before crossing into the broader American sacred repertoire.
“Where the Soul of Man Never Dies” became a bluegrass-gospel standard through subsequent treatments. The Stanley Brothers carried the song into their gospel sets, and the Ricky Skaggs and Tony Rice 1980 album Skaggs and Rice includes one of the canonical contemporary readings. It has been recorded by The Oak Ridge Boys, Willie Nelson, and many bluegrass acts, and remains one of the most reliably called bluegrass-gospel pieces at any jam session that includes a sacred set. The hymn’s combination of straightforward verse-chorus structure and uplifting transcendent imagery makes it one of the cleanest examples of the early-20th-century gospel-songwriting tradition.
