Stan Tyminski is the older brother of the singer and multi-instrumentalist Dan Tyminski, eleven years his senior, and the brother who, by Dan’s account, taught him the foundations of bluegrass. When Dan was a teenager the Tyminski brothers played around New England as Green Mountain Bluegrass.

Stan served in the Navy. He came home when Dan was twelve, playing a record Tony Rice had made with J.D. Crowe’s band, which also included Jerry Douglas, and Dan stayed out in the driveway listening to it over and over. Dan has said he always wanted to play with Stan and that music was the one thing they could share across the difference in their ages. Dan left Green Mountain Bluegrass at twenty to join the Lonesome River Band. The brothers sang together again on Dan’s first solo album, Carry Me Across the Mountain (2000), trading the lead on the Jimmie Davis song “I Dreamed of an Old Love Affair,” with Tony Rice on guitar, Dan on mandolin and Jerry Douglas on Dobro.
