One More Time Before You Go: A Tribute to Tony Rice is a five-song EP by Dan Tyminski, released on 22 July 2022 on North Star Records. It began, Tyminski has said, as a form of personal grief therapy in his home studio after Tony Rice died on Christmas Day 2020. Four of the songs are ones Rice recorded. The fifth, the title song, is an original that Tyminski wrote with Josh Williams, a guitarist who had played with Rice. Tyminski has said that within two days of hearing the news he had the music written.
The title track is the only full-band performance: Williams, Sam Bush on mandolin, Jerry Douglas on Dobro and Todd Phillips on bass. The other four are duos and trios. Molly Tuttle joins Tyminski on “Church Street Blues,” a Norman Blake song, and the two trade guitar breaks. Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent sing harmony on “Ten Degrees and Getting Colder” over a single guitar; hearing Rice open that song with J.D. Crowe and the New South is what moved Tyminski, who had favored mandolin and banjo, toward the guitar. Billy Strings sings harmony and plays guitar on “Where the Soul of Man Never Dies,” with Tyminski on mandolin, and Gaven Largent plays Dobro and sings on “Why You Been Gone So Long.”
