Album · 1992 · Rounder C 0285

Every Time You Say Goodbye was released by Rounder in 1992 (0285). Alison Krauss and Union Station recorded it as a quintet: Krauss on fiddle, Tim Stafford on guitar, Ron Block on banjo, Adam Steffey on mandolin and Barry Bales on bass, with all five taking vocal parts. At the 1993 Grammy Awards it won Best Bluegrass Album.

The 14 tracks divide the singing among the band. Krauss leads the title song, “Another Night,” “Last Love Letter” and “Lose Again”; Stafford leads “It Won’t Work This Time” and “Another Day, Another Dollar”; Steffey sings lead on “Cloudy Days”; and Block takes the lead on “Shield of Faith.” Block wrote three of the songs. The others include Karla Bonoff’s “Lose Again,” Shawn Colvin’s “I Don’t Know Why,” Marshall Wilborn’s “Heartstrings,” Dan Tyminski’s “Another Day, Another Dollar” and Jack Adkins’s “Another Night.” “Cluck Old Hen” is the one instrumental.
