New Primitive cover

New Primitive by Adam Steffey, released in 2013, is a mandolin showcase from one of the instrument's most decorated contemporary players. Steffey, a multiple IBMA Mandolin Player of the Year, built his reputation through long stints with Alison Krauss and Union Station and the occasional other high-profile collaboration, and this solo album gives him room to define his aesthetic on his own terms. The title reflects Steffey's interest in directness — in mandolin playing that prioritizes tone, rhythm, and melodic clarity over technical display for its own sake. The supporting cast is drawn from the Nashville bluegrass community, and the repertoire mixes original compositions with traditional and contemporary material. New Primitive is the record of a mature player who has distilled decades of experience into a focused personal statement.
