A Little Girl…A Big Four-Lane

Alecia Nugent

Album · 2006 · Rounder Records

A Little Girl—A Big Four-Lane was released by Rounder Records (catalog 11661 0566 2) on February 28, 2006, the second Rounder album for Louisiana-born singer Alecia Nugent. Like her self-titled 2004 debut, it was produced by Carl Jackson, the Grammy-winning songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, and recorded at Station West in Nashville. The studio band drew on contemporary bluegrass session players including Adam Steffey on mandolin, Rob Ickes on dobro, Jim Van Cleve on fiddle, Andy Falco and Jackson on guitar and banjo, and Kevin Grantt on bass, with Tony Creasman adding drums on some tracks. Harmony and guest vocals came from Alison Krauss, Cia Cherryholmes, Rebecca Lynn Howard, and Bradley Walker, among others.

The thirteen-track set pairs traditional-leaning material such as "I Cried All the Way to Kentucky" and "Letter from Home" with more commercially shaped songcraft drawn from writers including Larry Cordle and Jerry Salley. Reviewers noted the album's blend of contemporary bluegrass with pop and country influences, praising Nugent's clear lead vocals and the band's restrained, tasteful playing, though detailed critical coverage of the release is limited.
