“Cold Sheets of Rain” was written by Randall Hylton, one of the most prolific bluegrass songwriters of the late 20th century, and first recorded by The Virginia Squires in 1985. The song belongs to the family of contemporary bluegrass heartbreak songs that Hylton specialized in, and it became one of his most enduring titles.
Randall Hylton (1945–2001) wrote more than 250 songs across his career, switching his focus to bluegrass songwriting in 1977 and setting up his own publishing company, Greasy Creek Music. He was inducted into the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame in 2022, recognizing the breadth of his songwriting contribution to the genre.
“Cold Sheets of Rain” has been recorded by Lou Reid, Terry Baucom, and Carolina; The DejaBlue Grass Band; Bill Emerson and the Sweet Dixie Band; Stone Country Connection; Grass Routes; and others. It remains a regular feature in contemporary bluegrass sets, and a common workshop tune for singers learning the modern bluegrass-vocal idiom. The song’s title image — the rain as both literal weather and figurative loneliness — is a textbook example of the tight emotional economy that defined Hylton’s writing.
