Carolina Moon by Lou Reid, Terry Baucom and Carolina, released in 1994, is a carefully crafted neo-traditional bluegrass album built on the considerable combined experience of its leaders. Reid and Baucom had both served in prominent bluegrass bands — Reid with Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, Baucom with Ricky Skaggs and Tony Rice — before forming this ensemble, and the album reflects their deep familiarity with the post-Stanley, post-Monroe bluegrass tradition. "Cold Sheets of Rain" and "I Call Your Name" are characteristic: emotionally direct, harmonically grounded, and performed with the tightness that comes from musicians who have internalized the idiom rather than merely studied it. Carolina Moon was well received on the bluegrass circuit and established the band as a reliable voice in the traditional wing of the music.
