My Dixie Home, released in 2002 on Sugar Hill (SUG-CD 3951), is banjo player Jim Mills's solo statement and a banjo-forward homage to Earl Scruggs, J.D. Crowe, Sonny Osborne, and Grandpa Jones. Mills, then the banjo player for Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, was joined by Skaggs Kentucky Thunder colleagues Dan Tyminski on guitar and vocals, Adam Steffey on mandolin, Barry Bales on bass, Stuart Duncan on fiddle, and Paul Brewster on harmony, with vocals also from Skaggs and Tim O'Brien. The session was cut in just three days in May 2002 with minimal overdubs and light compression, chasing a live-room feel — a deliberate counter-current to the era's polished Nashville bluegrass aesthetic that Skaggs's own records had helped define.
