Studebaker cover

Studebaker (Sugar Hill Records SHCD 3869, 1997) is the debut solo album from guitarist Kenny Smith, a first-call Nashville player who had served as a sideman in Country Roads and other touring bands before establishing himself as a recording artist. Smith plays guitar and sings throughout; Adam Steffey plays mandolin; Sammy Shelor plays banjo; Daniel Carwile plays fiddle; and Barry Bales holds the bass. The album presents Smith's clean, rhythmically assertive flat-pick style — grounded in the bluegrass tradition and shaped by years of ensemble playing — in a program of original songs and instrumentals. Studebaker introduced a capable new voice in acoustic music circles and demonstrated Smith's ability to shape arrangements and lead a studio band with the confidence of a veteran sideman stepping naturally into the foreground.
