Country Songs (King 701) is a 12-track LP by Don Reno, Red Smiley and the Tennessee Cutups, released in November 1960. All twelve songs were recorded at King Studios in Cincinnati on 26 October 1959. The Bluegrass Discography lists Don Reno on lead guitar, Red Smiley on guitar, Ronnie Reno on mandolin, Mack Magaha on fiddle and percussion, John Palmer on bass and Ray Pennington on drums, with Smiley singing lead and Reno tenor. On “Dark as a Dungeon” the lineup is just Reno and Smiley on guitars, Palmer on bass and a drummer who is not named.
The songs are country material. They include “Freight Train Boogie,” “Lonesome Wind Blues” (credited to Wayne Raney), two songs credited to Grandpa Jones, “East Bound Freight Train” and “Eight More Miles to Louisville,” and “Charlie Brooks and Nellie Adair,” credited to Reno and Smiley. Discogs lists a later King pressing, also numbered 701, under the title Country Songs (Their Vocal and Instrumental Favorites).
