"David Peterson & 1946," released in 2001 as an independent recording, is the debut album of the Nashville-based traditional bluegrass band whose name is a deliberate historical marker — 1946 was the year Bill Monroe assembled the lineup with Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs that first recorded what is now recognized as bluegrass music. Peterson (guitar, vocals) leads alongside Charlie Derrington (mandolin, vocals), Steve Huber (banjo, vocals), Andy Todd (bass, vocals), and Richard Kriehn (fiddle), with Stuart Duncan and Aubrey Haynie as guests. Recorded at Mountainside Studio in Nashville, the band performed on a single microphone and dressed in period clothing as further authenticity statements — making this one of the more intellectually self-aware traditional-bluegrass revival projects of the early 2000s.
